Sleep is a time for rejuvenation of our body and mind. While we sleep, our cells are awake, repairing themselves.Sleep deprivation can lead to irritability and impairment of memory and physical performance of a person.

Sleep apnea: Sleep apnea is a treatable disorder in which a person stops breathing during sleep, often hundreds of times during the night. Sleep apnea is a common disorder that affects millions of men, women and children, but is often undiagnosed. It is estimated that at least ten million Indians have unrecognized sleep apnea.

'Apnea' is clinically defined in adults as cessation of airflow that lasts for more than ten seconds, Some times 'Hypopnea' with reduction in airflow may also occur, wherein the oxygen level in blood stream typically drops.

Obstructive sleep apnea is most common type of sleep apnea. Usually, the soft tissue in the rear of the throat collapses and closes the airway so that sufferers of sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during the sleep, as frequently as a hundred times an hour and often for a minute longer.

Consequences of untreated sleep apnea include high blood pressure, uncontrolled diabetes and other cardiovascular diseases. People with untreated sleep apnea may also complain of falling asleep inappropriately, morning headaches, memory problems, feeling of depression, reflux, frequent urination in night and impotence. A person with untreated sleep apnea has more chance to face motor vehicle accidents.

Risk factors for sleep apnea include obesity, a large neck, a recessed chin and abnormalities in the structure of upper airway, ethnicity, smoking and alcohol use.
